happy earth day! revisit this year's top examples of passive architecture

passive solar house design

Passive solar houses in colder areas will use heat-absorbent materials in the building design to maximize natural heat retention. This article will discuss how passive solar homes are designed and provide real examples to outline the benefits of these design strategies in colder climates. In conclusion, sustainable housing trends are reshaping the way we conceive, design and inhabit our living spaces.

The Best Roof Materials for Solar Panels - 5 Common Materials

The perimeter of the foundation wall or slab should be insulated to the frost line or around the slab perimeter. In a temperate or cold climate, the east and west walls of the sunspace should be insulated (no glass). The precise amount of equator-facing glass and thermal mass should be based on careful consideration of latitude, altitude, climatic conditions, and heating/cooling degree day requirements. 'Low-grade' energy needs, such as space and water heating, have proven over time to be better applications for passive use of solar energy. Objects and materials are placed behind these windows to absorb and retain the incoming heat. The materials used in these surfaces and objects are referred to as thermal mass materials due to their ability to effectively absorb and retain heat.

As part of a top-to-bottom renovation, consider installing a geothermal heating and cooling system to conserve energy. They work by tapping into stable temperatures a few feet below the earth’s surface to heat and cool a home. Poor heat and moisture management are the enemies of durable, comfortable, and efficient housing, and good building design and construction starts with a solid understanding of good building science. In the meantime we decided to maintain our old farmhouse as best we could and be thankful for the roof over our heads.

California Green Building Conference 2024

SIPs are sandwich panels with solid polystyrene (styrofoam) in the middle and oriented strand board structurally laminated to each side. One of the advantages of SIPs is that, if properly used, they are almost airtight, so a home will have minimal air infiltration. Keep in mind that you would also likely need to use mechanical ventilation, such as an energy recovery ventilator, for an airtight house to maintain indoor air quality while also maximizing energy efficiency. The light can be from passive windows or skylights and solar light tubes or from active daylighting sources. In traditional Japanese architecture the Shōji sliding panel doors, with translucent Washi screens, are an original precedent. International style, Modernist and Mid-century modern architecture were earlier innovators of this passive penetration and reflection in industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

Several Ways to Implement a Passive Energy Home

Stepping inside, the focus on natural light and connection to the outdoors continues, with a central courtyard featuring native plants offering a refuge from the sun and shaping the building’s organization. Thus, the Kalyon Energy Control Building stands as a testament to the potential for architecture to integrate with nature, fostering both ecological harmony and a sustainable workspace. The example above does not consider the increase in temperature and water content of the air caused by human occupants, opening doors, etc. Also, the comfort zones refer to people sitting at rest, and someone sweeping the floor may not be comfortable in those conditions. Also, fans are not considered passive devices, although their power consumption (typically about 50 Watts for a ceiling fan) is tiny compared to an air conditioner. First, a house should be designed so it is easy to exchange the inside air for outside air when the conditions are right.

Solar panels

Passive solar design strategies were used to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. Sited on an east-west axis, the home’s main living areas and window walls face due south. Western and eastern sun can provide warmth and lighting, but are vulnerable to overheating in summer if not shaded. In contrast, the low midday sun readily admits light and warmth during the winter, but can be easily shaded with appropriate length overhangs or angled louvres during summer and leaf bearing summer shade trees which shed their leaves in the fall. The amount of radiant heat received is related to the location latitude, altitude, cloud cover, and seasonal / hourly angle of incidence (see Sun path and Lambert's cosine law). Active solar refers to any system of solar panels whether it be photovoltaic power generation, or thermal solar where liquid passing through tubes collects heat to be redistributed through your house.

See how much solar panels cost in your area.

The open floor plan across all levels, alongside double-height ceilings, fosters a naturally light and airy atmosphere. This eliminates the need for excessive artificial lighting and air conditioning. Furthermore, the lack of partitions between the ground floor, featuring an open kitchen and bedroom, and the mezzanine master suite, allows for natural ventilation to flow freely throughout the villa. This synergy between design and Indonesia’s tropical climate creates a comfortable and eco-friendly living environment. The shape and size of your roof can also constitute effective passive design. Adding a large overhang allows light into your home during wintertime because the sun is at a higher angle, says Rodriguez.

Earth-Sheltered, Straw Bale, Log, and Manufactured Homes

These engineered lumber products utilize materials that would otherwise be waste, composite decking made of recycled plastics, and more. The basic form of this home is what I call the “Western Solar Farmhouse.” The floor plan is arranged around a central great room with a high-vaulted gable roof. Around the sides of the central great room are grouped rooms or porches with a lower-pitched hipped roof. The porches can go around all sides as they do in the classic plantation house design that’s built in tropical climates with shade cooling and “outdoor” rooms. The Western Solar Farmhouse’s central living area is typically a rectangle, and the solar gain rooms would usually be located on the long solar side.

Canadian Green Building Awards 2024 - Deadline March 11, 2024

The thermal mass, a 6-18 inch thick masonry wall, is located immediately behind south facing glass of single or double layer, which is mounted about 1 inch or less in front of the wall’s surface. Solar heat is absorbed by the wall’s dark-colored outside surface and stored in the wall’s mass, where it radiates into the living space. Solar heat migrates through the wall, reaching its rear surface in the late afternoon or early evening. When the indoor temperature falls below that of the wall’s surface, heat is radiated into the room.

Thermal imaging can be used to document areas of poor thermal performance such as the negative thermal impact of roof-angled glass or a skylight on a cold winter night or hot summer day. In this large atrium, museum visitors can bask in the warmth of direct sunlight and radiant heat, even during Cleveland’s notoriously harsh winters. The building also incorporates a smart shading system (which can be seen partially on the right side of the roof) that can be released if direct sunlight should be blocked during the hot summer months.

Instead, today’s best passive solar design is the result of centuries of testing different layouts, materials, and systems for optimizing the way sunlight is used to heat and illuminate a living space. In most climates, an overhang or other devices, such as awnings, shutters, and trellises will be necessary to block summer solar heat gain. Landscaping can also help keep your passive solar home comfortable during the cooling season. If you are considering passive solar design for a new home or a major remodel, consult an architect familiar with passive solar techniques.

The greenhouse should allow us to grow more foods over winter, and startseedlings early for the main garden. This is a picture of Liz with a harvest fromour winter (outside) garden taken in February of 2004. To reduce unwanted heat gain in the summer, all windows should be shaded by an overhang or other devices such as awnings, shutters and trellises. If an awning on a south facing window protrudes to half of a window’s height, the sun’s rays will be blocked during the summer, yet will still penetrate into the house during the winter. The sun is low on the horizon during sunrise and sunset, so overhangs on east and west facing windows are not as effective.

The goal is to help users create more energy efficient, more sustainable buildings, each of which is uniquely suited to its particular spot on this planet. As a Green designee, realtor Cheneil Lowe sits on the Atlanta Realtors Association’s sustainability committee. She often works with clients to find the solar panels that work best for their home and energy bill budgets. “With solar panels, homeowners can significantly reduce their dependence on traditional electricity sources, leading to substantial savings on their electric bills over time,” Lowe says.

I usually recommend clear double glass for solar-oriented windows and “low-e” glazing on the other sides. Low-e glazing limits incoming heat in summer and reduces heat loss from the inside in winter. Using clear glass on the south wall windows allows more of the sun’s energy to warm the house in winter, when the sun will be able to enter the house through the south-facing windows. In colder climates, using insulative window drapes or blinds at night helps reduce overnight heat loss and increase comfort. Sunrays may fall on a wall during the daytime and raise the temperature of its thermal mass.

Apples Human Interface Guidelines overview by Manan Gupta

It’s essential reading for anyone developing any form of person-focused content. The most comprehensive guide I could find besides this one on making human-readable iPhone app guidelines (besides this one 😉). This is a quick guide to each version’s iPhone’s screen size and resolution.

Well, what you need to do to create a perfect iOS app UI/UX Design is, understand Appl’e design language,. Furthermore, getting to know, proper use of controls, such as buttons, sliders, switches, and pickers, to provide familiar and intuitive interactions will give you an edge. Moreover, it’s also important to understand idea of app life cycle management to ensure smooth transitions between states and efficient resource usage. In an entirely expected move, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to reinstate net neutrality protections in the United States. The pre-training dataset used a combination of a subset of Dolma v1.6, RefinedWeb, deduplicated PILE, and a subset of RedPajama. Referred to as Open Source Efficient LLMs, or OpenELMs, the instruct models are hosted on collaborative platform Hugging Face.

Apple Announces 'Let Loose' Event on May 7 Amid Rumors of New iPads

It definitely is a long read but it also is fundamental for developers & designers. Designing for accessibility involves incorporating features like VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, and proper labeling of UI elements to make your app usable by people with disabilities. You need to understand the importance of providing value to users, avoiding excessive interruptions, and encouraging engagement. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines to avoid rejections and ensure your app meets Apple’s requirements. If you want to get advanced level, you should also explore techniques for hierarchical navigation, modal views, and contextual menus to provide seamless navigation experiences. Choose a cohesive color palette that aligns with your app’s branding and provides visual consistency.

How to connect to FTP servers in macOS using modern apps

Android-focused chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek offer system-on-chip packages optimized for generative AI. Apple is expected do the same with the next generation of Axx chips to allow more AI routines to take place on this year’s iPhone 16 family rather than in the cloud. The release of the source code for the models is the latest attempt by Apple to publicize its developments in AI and machine learning. Current ‌Mac Studio‌ machines use ‌M2‌ Max and ‌M2‌ Ultra chips, so we can expect the M4 models to be equipped with M4 Max and M4 Ultra (or its equivalent) chips. Aside from the Mac Pro, the ‌Mac Studio‌ is the only Apple machine that uses "Ultra" chips.

Even something as prosaic as the nature of the family unit inculcates a series of implications that may not hold true for everybody, and may offend or upset some of your users. The best approach, Apple says, is to avoid stereotypes and generalizations. Perhaps the biggest unsung highlight at WWDC 2021 was Apple’s decision to publish a detailed guide to encourage developers to build inclusive applications.

It even has information on the mundane stuff like loading (this properly tells you how to properly handle your loading states for your app). We AppIt LLC is a market-leading mobile application and website Development Company based in North Carolina, United States of America, with offices present across the world. We offer stellar development and maintenance services at affordable costs, which help businesses, grow and generate record-breaking revenue. Remember, thoughtful design decisions can significantly impact user engagement and ultimately contribute to the success of your iOS app. The first thing you need to learn here are the restrictions on prohibited content, unauthorized use of private APIs, and compatibility with the latest iOS versions.

MacBook M4: Performance

But if you merely make your pixels smaller, everything on the screen would get smaller too! To balance this, designers measure the size of elements on the screen in points. Once technology was good enough such that pixels were roughly half as tall/wide as they started, we could just use a 2x2 square of pixels for every point (this is called @2x). And once pixels were roughly a third as tall/wide as they started, we could use a 3x3 square of pixels for every point. Carrot Whether is the perfect example of an app that follows strict design guidelines while offering unique visuals and personality. To fit into Apple’s ecosystem, they should look simple, use a solid background, and avoid text.

Moreover, the use of view controllers to present and manage data is yet another important concept you need to understand. As such, one of the most important thing here is, the effective use of typography, color, and layout. Now, the first thing that comes to mind when you read this point is, UI/UX design, and rightfully so.

A design that works well on a narrower screen (375pt) will almost certainly work well on a slightly wider screen (414pt) – but the reverse is not true. So it’s always better to design for narrower screens first, then double-check and adjust for larger screens. Since height is less of a constraint, it matters less whether your art boards are, say, 667 or 812 pixels tall. Maybe you’ve never designed an iPhone app, and have no idea where to begin. Maybe you’ve designed a dozen, but still want one place to reference best practices.

The pull-down menu (above) is useful if you need to display a fairly short list of options, but for anything more complex, try the picker screen pattern. Switches appear within a list item with the label on the left and the binary choice switch on the right. Because page-wide actions appear on fixed menus (the nav bar or action bar), many on-page buttons apply only to a certain part of the page – and hence will appear on cards.

The App Store Review Guidelines cover factors such as app functionality, design, performance, stability, user experience, privacy, and adherence to legal and ethical standards. Designing an iOS app that adheres to Apple’s design guidelines is crucial for creating a visually appealing, intuitive, and user-friendly application. Now, if you want to create great iOS app design encompassing User interface and user experience, there are some guidelines. If you are someone who wants to create the next best iOS app, this blog is for you. IOS app development is trending, if you want to master it, you need to understand iOS app design guidelines.

There is no M3 Ultra at this time, but the architecture of the M3 Max chip has led to speculation that future Ultra chips might be standalone chips rather than constructed from two Max dies. Building inclusive apps, services, or businesses is an approach that enables whatever it is you have to offer to resonate with a far wider congregation of potential customers. It also makes sense to replace colloquial expressions with plain language, particularly as some commonly used terms may have hidden meanings that exclude some people.

While we're still short on technical details about the M4 and what to expect, Bloomberg reporter and Apple whisperer Mark Gurman believes AI will be a major marketing point for these chips. It's still early days so we don't know much yet about what to expect from these machines, but one of the surest bets is that they'll be powered by a new Apple M4 chip being cooked up in Cupertino. Apple is getting ready to unleash a fresh wave of MacBooks on the world, and all signs point to the first models hitting store shelves in the latter half of 2024. This year, Apple's categories include inclusivity, delight and fun, interaction, social impact, visuals and graphics, and innovation.

But with the App Store’s notoriously high standards, design can become a roadblock. Human interface guidelines will dictate a set of rules for general usability. User Interactions fall under this, User interaction is how the user acts on the system and how the system acts on the user. Hopefully, you’ll get a better perspective of the Guidelines after reading this. This is just an overview and I’ll only touch on a couple of topics, so you do need to check out the Guidelines for in-depth information on everything.

It’s easy in complex markets to use a kind of specialized “metalanguage” comprising terms most people may never have encountered before. When building apps and services, it makes sense to define those terms in plain language. The company has always led the industry when it comes to accessibility, but its move to push developers toward building inclusive apps is truly significant, particularly given the global shift to support such values. The need to develop inclusive experiences underlines the important place apps now have as windows through which we explore our worlds. Give me a shout at I’ll be continually updating this guide to be the most accurate and human-readable guide on the web for creating iPhone apps. This “frosted glass”-style status bar doesn’t add any additional colors, borders, or needlessly attention-attracting elements to the interface – it merely blurs whatever colors are below it, making the text more readable.

Some tasks involve a single screen – or a linear series of screens – that you want users to complete without totally leaving the context they were in. If you need to display more than 5, the fifth icons should be a “More” catch-all that shows other destinations on a quasi-picker screen when tapped. On iOS apps, primary destinations in the app are listed as tabs across the bottom. If it’s less important, it will disappear entirely – only visible when the user is at the very top of the page. Or, if you want a minimal status bar over a variety of images, use a background blur.

In August 2006, Rogue Pictures finalized a deal to remake The Last House on the Left (1972) with original writer and director Wes Craven as a producer. In 1972, he did not have the budget to film every piece of the story he wanted to tell. Many different versions of the film exist on various DVD and VHS releases struck from different cuts of the film, many of them from different countries.

Craven, who wrote and directed the original film, was interested to see what kind of film could be made on a larger budget, as the limited funds forced him to remove scenes he had wanted to film to tell a complete story. One of the elements Iliadis wanted to avoid with the film, given its graphic nature, was turning it into "torture porn". For Craven and Iliadis, the film primarily illustrates how even the most normal of families can be driven to commit evil acts if pushed too far. Distributor Hallmark Releasing, in partnership with American International Pictures, gave him and Craven funding after the box office success of Cunningham's Together (1971).

Krug hides, and attacks John and Justin when they search for him. Justin is stabbed by Krug, but with a combined effort from Emma and John, Krug is knocked unconscious.

This movie is featured in the following articles.

Chilling remake of the 1972 cult classic chronicles the gripping tale of homicidal maniacs who seek refuge at an out-of-the-way house that happens to be the home of their victim's parents, who learn of the killers' crime and seek revenge. The next morning, Mari and Phyllis are bound, gagged, and put in the trunk of Krug's car and transported to the woods. Phyllis is forced to urinate in her jeans, and Mari and Phyllis are forced to perform sexual acts on each other. Phyllis distracts the kidnappers to give Mari an opportunity to escape but is chased by Sadie and Weasel, while Junior stays behind to guard Mari. Mari tries gaining Junior's trust by giving him her necklace and calling him "Willow". Phyllis stumbles across a cemetery where she is cornered and stabbed by Weasel.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, with several deeming it worthy of praise in comparison to other horror films and remakes in general, while others considered it inferior to the original. Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002.

She finds blood-soaked clothing in their luggage and overhears them talking about Mari's death and her disposal in a nearby lake. Like the exploitation films Night of the Living Dead (1968) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the film has received critical reevaluation years after release, with particular praise towards the narrative and performances of Peabody and Hess. It has since achieved a cult following and received a nomination for AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills in 2001. The Last House on the Left is directed by Dennis Iliadis and adapted to screenplay by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth from the story by Wes Craven (co-producer here).

A storm forces Krug, Francis, Sadie, and Justin to seek refuge at a nearby house. Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house.

To get a completely uncut version is difficult as even some cinema machinists cut footage from prints of the movie before screening it during the 1970s; many copies were cut or "hacked to pieces" and because of this, some scenes have become rarities. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to attend a rock concert in the city. Attempting to score some drugs on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic Krug. Mari Collingwood plans to attend a concert with her friend Phyllis Stone for her seventeenth birthday. Her parents, Estelle and John, express their concern about her friendship with Phyllis but let her go and give her a peace symbol necklace. Before the concert, Mari and Phyllis encounter Junior while trying to buy marijuana.

Mari convinces Junior to let her go, but her escape is halted by Krug. Mari vomits, quietly says a prayer, and walks into a nearby lake, where Krug fatally shoots her. As they try to find the key to their boat so that they can take Mari to the hospital, Francis happens upon Mari. When going after Krug and Sadie, who are in bed, they find Justin holding Krug's gun; Justin gives the gun to John so that he can kill Krug. Sadie awakens and John shoots and wounds her in the neck, allowing Krug to escape through the window and into their house.

North Pole Cruises Journey to North Pole

cruise to north pole

Despite all the modern equipment on the bridge of Le Commandant Charcot, Marchesseau tells me that he and his officers still read the clouds ahead to find the best path forward through the ice. They would also look for "ice blink" — a glow on the horizon caused by the reflection of snow-topped ice on the clouds. But from my perch in the ship's elegant observation lounge, five decks above, all I can see is the white of the snow all around. Refurbished as part of the Norwegian Edge program in 2018, Norwegian Star shines with upgrades. The extensive enhancements include upgrades to staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges. Start the day at Mandara Spa, where you can revive, refresh and recharge.

When should I start to plan my trip?

Attempted by many and reached by only a few, today, the North Pole is more reachable than ever. Standing on the icy wilderness on top of the world is an experience to behold, a journey that few have ever made. Reach the top of the world on a luxury icebreaker cruise to the North Pole and encounter epic polar wilderness.

The Best Time to Visit the North Pole

In the waters of Spitsbergen or Baffin Bay, humpback whales, finbacks, narwhals, orcas and seals put on a breathtaking show. On land, we observe polar bears, walruses, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer with emotion. In the air, countless bird species, including Arctic terns, puffins, sea eagles, gannets and bald eagles share the horizon. Between the western coast of Greenland and the east of Arctic Canada, Baffin Bay is one of the most secret seas on the planet. The North Magnetic Pole is found here, between expanses of icy waters, icebergs, glaciers and gigantic fjords. As if to add to the magic of this fabulous setting, the wild fauna offers a grandiose show.

Grand Lapland Tour, Finland, Sweden and Norway

A personal favourite with us at North Pole cruises and one of the most advanced polar exploration ships ever constructed, it was launched in 2021. Among the indulgences of Le Commandant Charcot is a contingent of 18 expedition guides, or nearly one for every 10 passengers. They are experts in ornithology, geology, biology and more; some are kayak and hiking guides. As we sail through the ice, they offer daily lectures on what we see around us, from the polar bear to the cracking ice. We giddily take pictures next to a sign labeled "North Pole" that our expedition guides have brought along for the occasion.

As the Chairman’s Ambassador, Fernando hosts your cruise with his own special brand of joie de vivre. Fernando has cruised the world over decades in travel, forging lasting connections with every place he’s gone and every person he’s travelled with — and he looks forward to doing the same with you. 50 Years of Victory’s dedicated helicopter enables North Pole visitors to soar above the vast icy landscapes and truly appreciate the magnitude of the seldom-visited North Pole. You still have many options to explore with the best expedition team in the Polar Regions by considering itineraries to Spitsbergen in the Norwegian Arctic, Greenland, Iceland and the Canadian High Arctic.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

The summer months are the only time of year to embark on a North Pole cruise, but this doesn’t mean bathing suit weather – unless you want to take a dip in the ship’s heated pool or go for our popular Polar Plunge. Seasonal temperatures average about 0 degrees Celsius and ice ranges between two and three meters thick. Upon arrival at 90 degrees north, adventurers enjoy a champagne toast and a celebration of the feat of making it to the top of the world.

Set your eyes on whale-abundant waters and catch a glimpse of penguin colonies as you sail past and feel free to experience all the wonder that surrounds you. North Pole Cruises: Your Guide to Arctic Trips to the North Pole

Given the extreme conditions of the Arctic, safety is a top priority. The 50 Years of Victory is equipped with advanced navigation and safety systems to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew. Designed as an icebreaker, the 50 Years of Victory has a reinforced hull that enables it to break through thick Arctic ice, ensuring a clear path for navigation. The ship aims to minimize its impact on the delicate polar ecosystems. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear.

Together, the visits to Svalbard and Greenland offer an ice experience different from our days weaving through the north polar ice cap. Above the 78th parallel north, Spitsbergen also appears like a land at the end of the world. The last island before the North Pole, Spitsbergen unveils craggy coastlines that melt into a sea of ice. In the heart of these white landscapes and these preserved places, the polar bear is known as a great predator and reigns supreme over the ice floe.

We walk a perimeter marked off around the vessel, protected by rifle-carrying lookouts scanning the horizon for polar bears. (The rifles are only to be used as a last resort.) We make snow angels in the ground and sip hot chocolate at a warming station the crew sets up on the ice. But channels of open water, or leads, have long been found across the polar ice cap in the warmest months when the ice melts back. Early Arctic explorers, we learn, would use them to navigate the polar regions.

A new fleet of luxury expedition ships with ice-strengthened hulls voyage to the North Pole in safety and comfort. An older fleet of Russian icebreakers, converted for use in tourism, is currently on hold. Hall Island has a beautiful landscape and is common hiked when polar bears are not in the area. The island is a breeding ground for seabirds and the cliffs are teeming with species such as little auks and fulmars. Part of the Russian Arctic National Park since 2012, the Franz Josef Land archipelago is a wildly beautiful Polar utopia made up of 191 islands. Animals to be on the lookout for include polar bears, walruses and even certain rare whale species such as narhwal and beluga.

Instead, we head northeastward from the archipelago, cutting at an angle through an area of the ice cap where satellite images show more openings. Just 819 miles from the North Pole, Longyearbyen is not far from the polar ice cap that covers the top of the planet. Twenty-four hours after departing the town, we leave open water behind and begin pushing into it.

The small town of Dover is a historic treasure as well as a place of scenic beauty. Within Dover is the Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge, an over 8,000-acre habitat of waterfowl and plant life, as well as the Land Between Lakes National Recreation Area. On this narrow and gorgeous stretch of the Cumberland River, your ship docks at the beautiful riverfront park at Clarksville. Music Cities Cruise Itinerary

Explore the road leading to Cherokee, North Carolina, lined with trees, roadside waterfalls, and scenic rivers. Explore one of the most historic areas of the park, Cades Cove, in a caravan of Jeeps with individual guides who will provide narration along each bend. From the village to the loop that surrounds the cove, the beauty and serenity of this Appalachian paradise will be a lasting memory. Learn about the park, its history, and inhabitants at the Sugarlands Visitor Center. Cataract Falls is a short, gentle walk from the Visitor Center and provides an opportunity to casually explore nature. Arrive at Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport and check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

Entry was complimentary for American Cruise Line guests as an included excursion, so we figured to give it a go. It was very much small-town America, with a central main street with tiny shops and a courthouse. It was a great place to learn about the area’s Native Americans; the historically significant mounds in the area were mentioned several times in additional locations during cruise excursions. Something that is important to note is that in some cities, you have limited time in port, so you can only do one excursion, like in Decatur, Alabama.

The itinerary includes a range of excursions such as visits to Shiloh National Military Park in Savannah, TN; the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL; and the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. Guests can also enjoy active outdoor excursions like an ATV Backcountry Excursion in Chattanooga, or a visit to “The Shoals,” where they can golf 18 holes at the beautiful Robert Trent Jones golf course.

There were modern twists and takes on quilting going completely beyond the “square” pieces of quilting fabric. There were more “traditional” quilts that took beadwork and sewing to levels we didn’t even know were possible. We learned more about how the Tennessee River shaped the area in the museum, which was very cool because we were sailing the American Cruise Lines Tennessee River itinerary. The museum had one table set up with complimentary whiskey and muscadine wine samplings. A shuttle ran between the ship and the museum every 30 minutes, or it was an easy 15-minute walk from the ship to the location. We rode a shuttle there and walked back to the ship for some exercise.

Harmony Of The Seas Itinerary, Current Position, Ship Review Royal Caribbean

harmony cruise

The ship is split into seven neighborhoods and features a range of some of Royal Caribbean’s favorite venues and attractions. Their other show is “iSkate Showcase.” It’s a chance for the cast to show off their talent with songs that they have chosen. It is high energy, fun, and they are very engaging with the audience. I received my e-mail from Royal Caribbean with their updated “Healthy Sailing” instructions two days before the cruise. It has been just over nine months since Royal Caribbean restarted cruises from North America, and on April 24th, 2022 I boarded Harmony of the Seas for my 13th cruise since the "Royal Comeback."

Usually the Captain, Hotel Director and the cruise director toast to the room and say a few words before leaving you to your meal with your fellow passengers. On the first day we had invitations in our room for the “virtual backstage tour.” I’m not sure what that entails, as it is on day 6 of our cruise, all I do know is that the bridge tours and the behind the scenes tours remain unavailable. On Harmony, Pinnacles are still not permitted in Coastal Kitchen for breakfast. We waited 45 minutes for our food to come out, only for it to be cold. You may have heard that the Windjammer buffet has gone back to self service.

Among the new technologies on the Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas are the RFID wristbands or "WOWbands" - an optional choice to replace the SeaPass cards, allowing passengers to do purchases onboard and to access their cabins. Typically, wristbands are offered complimentary to all passengers. Junior Suite and above guests still receive the wristbands for free. Royal Caribbean wanted to wow its guest with the breadth of activities on Harmony of the Seas, which include some options that are exclusive to Royal Caribbean. Guests will find plenty of traditional cruise activities on Harmony of the Seas, such as trivia, bingo, enrichment classes and more.

I don’t think anyone can be bored on an Oasis Class ship when there is so much to do every day of your cruise. During the day, you can participate in several activities and events, and then in the evening, you can watch top-notch entertainment. The sheer size of Harmony of the Seas is astounding; it's easy to forget you're on a ship, especially when you're hanging out on the Royal Promenade, which feels more like a Vegas hotel than a cruise ship. It also means you're less likely to feel the waves, a big plus for those prone to seasickness. At this point, you may be wondering just how big the Harmony of the Seas is.

We did not dock somewhere else and we had another sea day instead. The Main Dining Room on Harmony of the Seas is spread out between three decks with different names - we were on deck three in the American Icon Grill. The cabin was 172 square feet in size and included a large closet, a vanity with drawers, a chair, a king bed split into two beds, and a bathroom. Cabin was located on the starboard and aft of the ship, meaning it was slightly towards the back of the ship.

COSTA MAYA

The other option you have is specialty dining, where there is an additional cost to dine. Specialty dining costs can come in the form of cover charges (pay one fee and get all the food included) or a la carte charges (pay for only what you order). In general, specialty dining offers food and cooking styles not available elsewhere on the ship for guests that choose to indulge in them. Harmony of the Seas is the third Oasis Class ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet, but her debut ushered in a set of new features and amenities to the Oasis Class that enhanced an already impressive cruise experience. When Harmony of the Seas debuted in 2016, she was the largest cruise ship in the world.

Probably the biggest difference between them is the lack of a plunge pool in the adults-only Solarium on Harmony of the Seas. The smaller cruise ship, however, has a great bar in that area, which the Symphony does not. You would be hard pressed to take part in everything on offer on the 5,479-passenger Harmony of the Seas in a week. Treat yourself to star-studded Italian feasts at Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver.

Norwegian hosts too many honeymooners to give away costly freebies, but you can book one of five packages. The improved ship design allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships. Harmony of the Seas left port (Saint-Nazaire) for the first time on March 10, 2016.

If you're avid spa-goers, spring for an AquaClass cabin, with in-room wellness amenities and exclusive access to the chic specialty restaurant Blu as well as the spa's relaxation room and Persian garden thermal suite. Concierge Class provides access to nightly canapes, priority boarding, pillow menus and more, without the full cost of booking a suite. Traditionally for large-sized US riverboats, American Harmony has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ship's cruise itinerary route.

The performances in the Royal Theater and AquaTheater are must-see events, and the ice skating show is very good as well. Considering there is no additional cost to see these shows, you will want to check them out because Royal Caribbean has put a lot of energy and talent into the performances. If you are looking for recommendations for specialty dining, be sure to check out Izumi Hibachi, 150 Central Park or Sabor. Our goal has been to provide our readers with expansive coverage of all aspects of the Royal Caribbean experience.

Carnival Cruise Line Names Jay Leno Godfather of Carnival Venezia

In terms of dress code, it’s “cruise casual” – almost anything goes except for bathing attire, flip-flops, and cut-off or basketball shorts. Carnival offers comedy shows nightly, often in a smaller, secondary show lounge rather than in the main theater. A cruise will usually have two to six Punchliner acts onboard (often in rotation), depending on the length of the cruise, with one to five comedy shows scheduled for each evening. A five-night cruise might have 10 shows total, whereas a nine-night sailing might offer 30 performances. Early-evening shows are deemed family-friendly, with no cursing and all-ages material.

In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). The Caribbean may be small in size, but it packs a major punch when it comes to things to do and see. We’re talking about 80 degree days where the sun shines and you get a cool breeze from the coast. When you sail through the Caribbean on your Carnival cruise you can expect to have lots of fun options for excursions, like zip lining through rainforests or snorkeling above coral reefs.

Unlike comedy clubs on land, there is no charge or minimum drink purchase at The Punchliner Comedy Club on Carnival. There are two different kinds of shows offered, adults only (rated R) and family friendly (rated PG). Those under 18 are never allowed in the adults only shows (Carnival is very strict about this).

What kinds of shows are performed at The Punchliner Comedy Club?

Late-night shows are for adults only, with themes inappropriate for children. “Dive-In Movies” on Carnival are one of the things I love most about the line. So if you’re booked on a Carnival cruise soon, be sure to grab a bag of popcorn (note there is a $4 charge for popcorn), some buffet desserts, and a cocktail, pull up a lounger, and enjoy a flick at sea! Here are the movies that will be shown on Carnival cruises for the last week of November and December 2023. To see when specific movies are playing on your sailing, check your daily printed Fun Times schedule or the Carnival HUB app.

Located on the Gulf Coast of the United States and known as the 12th largest port in the country, the cruise port of Mobile Alabama is definitely one for history buffs. Explore Baltimore’s rich history and culture as you visit the local neighborhoods which are home to important world changing events.

There are capacity limits for every show and popular comedians will attract large crowds. You can find out which comedians are performing each night by looking on the HUB App or on the daily printed Fun Times schedule provided to your cabin each day. Sometimes the same show will be repeated over the course of a cruise, so be sure to check the schedule in advance for the names of the shows. Also, if there are back-to-back shows scheduled and you’d like to see both of them, crew will usually clear the club between shows, so you’ll have to exit and then re-enter.

The announcement comes just prior to Carnival Venezia's arrival to the U.S., where it will operate cruises from New York. The former Costa Venezia is sailing for the famous Fun Ship line as part of Carnival's new "Costa by Carnival" venture. All Carnival Punchliner Comedy shows are free of charge, though some comedians are funnier when you've purchased a cocktail to sip before or during the show. The Punchliner Comedy Club is Carnival's nightly lineup of comedy acts. In Miami, you’ll enjoy a small taste of the tropical weather many of you will experience during your cruise, and you’ll see why Miami is one of the most popular places to live in America. Carnival Venezia offer sailings from New York to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda and Canada and New England through late 2024, when it repositions to Port Canaveral, Florida.
